Things that are true everywhere in the valley
Some appliance problems show up more here than in milder climates. We mention them on the relevant repair pages, but in short:
- Heat. Summer afternoons routinely pass 105 °F, and garages get hotter than that. Refrigerators and freezers in garages, and condenser fans and compressors in general, work hardest from June through September.
- Hard water. Valley water comes from the Colorado River system through Lake Mead and is hard. Mineral scale affects water inlet valves, ice makers, dishwasher spray arms and washer dispensers.
- Dust. Fine dust clogs refrigerator condenser coils and dryer vents faster than you might expect.
- Monsoon storms. July through September brings storms and power interruptions. If an appliance acts up right after an outage, tell us — it helps the diagnosis.
