Frigidaire Refrigerator Sealed-System Repair

The sealed system is the refrigerant circuit that actually moves heat out of your Frigidaire refrigerator. When it fails — a leak, a restriction, a failed compressor or evaporator — the repair has to be done by an EPA 608-certified technician with recovery, vacuum and charging equipment. We diagnose it carefully first, because most "not cooling" problems turn out not to be sealed-system problems at all.

What the sealed system is

A Frigidaire refrigerator's sealed system is a closed loop with five main parts:

ComponentJobTypical failures
CompressorPumps refrigerant vapor and raises its pressureWon't start, shorted or grounded windings, runs but won't pump
CondenserReleases heat under or behind the cabinetClogged with dust, leaks, poor airflow from a failed condenser fan
Filter-drierTraps moisture and debrisSaturated or clogged; must be replaced whenever the system is opened
Capillary tubeMeters refrigerant into the evaporatorRestriction from moisture, debris or oil sludge
EvaporatorAbsorbs heat inside, behind the freezer panelLeaks (corrosion or puncture), physical damage

It is called "sealed" because it is closed at the factory and should stay closed unless a certified technician opens it to repair it.

Problems that are NOT sealed-system problems

Before we even consider sealed-system work, we rule out the common, less expensive causes:

  • Evaporator or condenser fan motors
  • Defrost heater, defrost thermostat, sensors and the defrost control
  • Air damper and airflow blockages
  • Start relay, overload and wiring
  • A dirty condenser coil
  • Door gaskets that don't seal

Getting this order right is what keeps a $300 repair from turning into a $1,300 one.

Sealed-system problems we diagnose and repair

Refrigerant leaks

Leaks are found by pressure-testing and leak detection, then repaired by brazing where the leak is accessible, or by replacing the leaking component. See refrigerant leak repair.

Restrictions

A partial or full blockage, most often at the capillary tube or filter-drier. A restriction can look like a low charge: little cooling and a mostly bare evaporator coil. The difference shows up in pressures and temperatures at specific points in the system. Repair usually means recovery, clearing or replacing the restricted section, a new filter-drier, evacuation and a fresh charge.

Moisture and contamination

Moisture inside a sealed system can freeze at the capillary tube and cause intermittent cooling that comes and goes. A compressor that burned out internally can leave acid and debris behind. Both require a new filter-drier, and contamination may need additional cleanup and a longer, deeper evacuation so the new parts aren't damaged.

Evaporator replacement

When the evaporator coil itself leaks or is damaged, it is replaced. That means removing the freezer's interior panels to reach it, brazing in the new coil, and completing the full recovery, vacuum and charging procedure. Access varies a lot between top-freezer, side-by-side and French-door designs, which is the main reason evaporator jobs vary in price.

Condenser problems

Most condenser problems are airflow: dust-clogged coils and failed condenser fans, both common in Las Vegas. True condenser leaks are less common and are repaired or the condenser is replaced as part of a sealed-system repair.

Compressor failure

See compressor replacement for how we confirm it and what it involves.

Inverter compressor diagnostics

On Frigidaire models with a variable-speed compressor, the compressor is driven by an electronic inverter control. We test the inverter control, its supply and its wiring according to the model's service information before condemning the compressor.

How we do sealed-system work

  • EPA Section 608-certified technicians for all refrigerant handling
  • Refrigerant recovery — never venting
  • Clean brazing and a filter-drier that is cut out, not unbrazed, so trapped moisture stays out
  • A new filter-drier whenever the system is opened
  • Deep evacuation verified with a micron gauge
  • A weighed-in charge matched to the refrigerator's rating plate
  • Verification of temperatures, cycling and amperage before we leave

Estimates for typical repairs, not quotes. Your exact price is given for approval after diagnosis, before work begins. The $75 service call is applied toward an approved repair. How our pricing works.

Sealed-system repairs are quoted after diagnosis, once we know what failed and how hard it is to reach. We'll always talk through repair versus replacement first.

Sealed-system questions

How do I know if my refrigerator has a sealed-system problem?

You can't tell for sure from the outside, which is why it takes diagnosis. Warning signs include a refrigerator that runs constantly but never gets cold, an evaporator coil that is bare or only frosted at the inlet, and cooling that slowly gets worse over weeks. Fans, defrost parts and controls are ruled out first.

Can you add refrigerant without fixing the leak?

No. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up." If the charge is low, there's a leak, and adding refrigerant without repairing it just postpones the failure and releases more refrigerant into the air.

How long do sealed-system repairs last?

A properly done repair — new filter-drier, clean brazing, deep vacuum and an exact charge — can last as long as a factory system. Shortcuts like skipping the drier or charging by guesswork are what cause repeat failures.

Do you work on refrigerators that use R-600a?

Yes. R-600a (isobutane) is flammable, so it requires specific handling procedures and equipment, which our EPA 608-certified technicians follow.
