Frigidaire Refrigerator Refrigerant Leak Repair
A refrigerant leak makes a Frigidaire refrigerator lose cooling gradually — usually over weeks — until it barely cools at all. The fix is to find the leak, repair or replace the leaking part, and restore the exact factory charge after a deep vacuum. Typical cost in the Las Vegas Valley is $400–$1,320.

Signs of a refrigerant leak
- Cooling that slowly gets worse over days or weeks, rather than stopping suddenly
- The compressor runs almost all the time but the cabinet stays warm
- On the evaporator coil, frost only near the inlet and the rest of the coil bare
- A refrigerator that cooled fine after a defrost or fan repair, then faded again
None of these proves a leak on its own. A restriction looks similar, and so does a compressor that isn't pumping well, which is why sealed-system diagnosis matters before any refrigerant is added.
Where refrigerator leaks usually happen
| Location | Why it leaks | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Evaporator coil | Corrosion or a puncture (for example from chipping at ice with a sharp tool) | Braze repair if accessible, otherwise evaporator replacement |
| Brazed joints and process tubes | Vibration and age | Re-braze |
| Condenser and compressor-area tubing | Vibration rub-through, corrosion | Braze repair or section replacement |
| Tubing inside insulated walls | Hidden lines, especially on some designs | Often bypass or major repair; may favor replacement |
How we find and fix the leak
- Confirm low charge or a leak with temperature readings and frost patterns, and rule out the look-alikes first. Frigidaire's own bulletins warn that a failed defrost timer or evaporator fan can mimic a sealed-system problem.
- Check the serial plate for the refrigerant type and charge before opening anything.
- Recover any remaining refrigerant with EPA-approved recovery equipment — never vented.
- Pinpoint the leak with an electronic leak detector or bubble solution (R-600a systems need a detector made for that refrigerant).
- Repair the leak by brazing, or replace the leaking component.
- Cut out the old filter-drier and install a new one. Frigidaire's manual calls for cutting it out, not unbrazing it, because heat drives trapped moisture back into the system.
- Evacuate for at least 30 minutes to 500 microns, verified with a micron gauge.
- Charge with new refrigerant in the exact amount on the serial plate. Frigidaire does not allow recovered refrigerant to be reused.
- Leak-test and verify — the low side with the unit off, the high side with it running — then check temperatures and cycling.
All refrigerant work is performed by EPA Section 608-certified technicians.
Refrigerant leak repair cost
| Repair | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerant leak repair and recharge EPA 608 | $400–$1,320 | EPA 608 work. Depends on leak location and access. |
| Filter-drier, evacuation and recharge (restriction) EPA 608 | $450–$1,100 | EPA 608 work. |
| Evaporator replacement EPA 608 | $600–$1,430 | EPA 608 work. Includes recovery, brazing, evacuation and recharge. |
| Compressor replacement EPA 608 | $700–$1,650 | EPA 608 work. Includes filter-drier, evacuation and weighed-in charge. |
Estimates for typical repairs, not quotes. Your exact price is given for approval after diagnosis, before work begins. The $75 service call is applied toward an approved repair. How our pricing works.
Where in the range your repair falls depends mostly on where the leak is and how hard it is to reach. A leak at an accessible joint near the compressor is on the low end; a leaking evaporator that has to be replaced is on the high end. If the leak is inside an insulated wall, we'll explain your options honestly, including whether replacing the refrigerator makes more sense.

Refrigerant leak questions
Can I just recharge my refrigerator?
A refrigerator only loses refrigerant through a leak. Recharging without finding and fixing the leak means the refrigerator will stop cooling again. Charging also requires EPA 608 certification.
Is a refrigerant leak dangerous?
The amount in a household refrigerator is small. Many newer refrigerators use R-600a, which is flammable, so if you suspect a leak, keep sparks and open flame away from the back of the refrigerator, ventilate the room and have it checked. Older units commonly use R-134a, which isn't flammable but still must not be vented.
How long does refrigerant leak repair take?
Usually half a day or less on site for an accessible leak. Evaporator replacement or a leak that requires ordering parts may take two visits.
Will the repair last?
A repair that fixes the actual leak, with a new filter-drier, a proper vacuum and an exact charge, is a permanent repair. Frigidaire's service manual is clear that adding refrigerant without finding and repairing the leak won't permanently fix the problem. Leak sealant additives are not something we use in residential refrigerators.
Does a leak mean the compressor has to be replaced too?
Not always. Frigidaire's service manual says a high-side leak that still has some refrigerant in the system doesn't require a new compressor. But in R-134a systems, a leak on the low side (usually the evaporator) lets moisture in, and the manual calls for replacing the compressor in that case. We'll tell you which situation you're in before any work starts.
