What we repair on Frigidaire refrigerators
Every Frigidaire refrigerator style we see in Las Vegas homes:
Top-freezer and bottom-freezer models, including the many builder-grade units in valley homes and garages.
Side-by-side models with through-the-door ice and water.
French-door models, standard and Gallery, counter-depth and full-depth.
Professional and Gallery refrigerators, plus all-refrigerator and all-freezer columns.
Common repairs include evaporator and condenser fan motors, defrost heaters and thermostats, temperature sensors, air dampers, main control boards, ice makers, water inlet valves and dispenser components — and, when the problem is inside the sealed system, compressor replacement, refrigerant leak repair and other sealed-system repair.
Knowing the layout makes the symptoms make sense. In most Frigidaire no-frost refrigerators, one evaporator coil behind the freezer's rear panel makes all the cold. A fan pulls air across that coil and pushes it into the freezer, and a duct (often with a motorized damper) sends part of it to the fresh-food section. The compressor and condenser, under the cabinet at the back, reject the heat. Every few hours a defrost heater melts the frost off the evaporator coil, and the water drains to a pan under the refrigerator where it evaporates.
That's why so many refrigerator problems show up the same way: the freezer stays cold while the refrigerator section gets warm. Anything that reduces airflow from the freezer — a stopped fan, a coil packed with ice, a stuck damper — starves the fresh-food side first.
Refrigerator warm, freezer still cold
This is the most common Frigidaire refrigerator complaint we get. The usual causes, roughly in order of how often we find them:
Evaporator fan motor not running. No airflow, so the fresh-food side warms up. Often you'll hear the compressor running but feel no air at the vents inside the freezer.
Defrost failure. The coil ices over completely, blocking airflow. Classic sign: frost or a solid sheet of ice on the freezer's rear panel. See frost patterns below.
Air damper stuck closed. The freezer is fine; the fresh-food section isn't getting its share of cold air.
Sensor or control fault. A failed thermistor or control output can make the refrigerator stop calling for cooling.
Refrigerator not cooling at all
When both compartments are warm, the question is whether the compressor is running and whether heat is leaving the condenser.
Compressor silent, fans running: start device, overload, control output, wiring or a compressor that won't start. We measure before we condemn the compressor — a failed start relay costs a fraction of a compressor.
Compressor running, condenser fan stopped: the system overheats and cooling drops off. Very common after a long Las Vegas summer; the condenser fan works hardest when the kitchen or garage is hot.
Everything running, little cooling: a dirty condenser, a refrigerant leak, a restriction, or a compressor that runs but no longer pumps. This is where sealed-system diagnosis comes in.
What frost patterns tell us
Frost on the evaporator coil is one of the most useful diagnostic clues, which is why we look at it on almost every no-cooling call:
What the coil looks like
What it usually points to
Solid, even ice across the whole coil
Defrost system failure — heater, defrost thermostat/terminator, sensor or control
Light frost only at the first few passes near the inlet, rest of the coil bare
Low refrigerant charge (leak) or a partial restriction
No frost at all, coil not cold, compressor running
No refrigerant flow — restriction, major leak, or a compressor that isn't pumping
Normal light frost, but no air moving
Evaporator fan problem
Ice buildup on the freezer floor or around the drain
Blocked defrost drain or a door that isn't sealing
A frost pattern narrows the problem; it doesn't replace testing. We confirm with electrical tests on the defrost and fan circuits, and with temperature readings — and, only when the evidence points there, with sealed-system diagnostics.
Ice maker and water dispenser problems
Ice and water complaints are common with Las Vegas water, which is very hard. Mineral scale clogs water inlet valve screens and can restrict filters and fill tubes.
Typical causes:
No water to the ice maker or dispenser: closed supply valve, kinked line, an old or wrong water filter, a frozen fill tube, or a failed inlet valve.
Ice maker not cycling: the ice maker module, its sensor or arm, or a freezer that isn't cold enough for the ice maker to harvest.
Door ice maker problems (French-door models): ice compartment too warm, ice fused into a block, or the auger motor and door components.
Leaks at the dispenser or behind the refrigerator: cracked fittings, a failed valve, or a water line that was pinched when the refrigerator was pushed back.
Refrigerator leaking water
Water on the floor usually comes from one of three places: the defrost drain (blocked, so water overflows inside and drips out), the water supply system (valve, fittings, filter housing), or the drain pan under the unit. Water under the crisper drawers is almost always the defrost drain. We find the source first; guessing leads to replacing the wrong part.
When the problem is the sealed system
The sealed system is the closed refrigerant circuit: compressor, condenser, filter-drier, capillary tube and evaporator. Sealed-system problems include compressor failure, refrigerant leaks, restrictions and moisture contamination.
These repairs require EPA Section 608 certification, refrigerant recovery equipment, brazing equipment, a vacuum pump and micron gauge, and an accurate scale for the charge. On Frigidaire refrigerators the factory charge is small and listed in grams or ounces on the serial plate, so a weighed-in charge is the only correct way to finish the job.
They also cost more than component repairs, so we discuss repair versus replacement before any sealed-system work. More detail:

Typical Frigidaire refrigerator repairs
Typical Repair Example
Fresh-food section warm, freezer still cold
Frigidaire Gallery French-door refrigerator
Symptom
Freezer was holding temperature, but the refrigerator section had crept into the high 40s and milk was spoiling.
Diagnostic finding
No airflow from the freezer into the fresh-food section. The evaporator fan motor was not turning, and its windings tested open. The evaporator coil itself was clear of heavy frost, so defrost was not the root cause.
Repair performed
Replaced the evaporator fan motor and confirmed airflow at the fresh-food vents.
Parts involved
Evaporator fan motor
Result
Both compartments were back at their set temperatures within a few hours.
Approximate total $345
Typical Repair Example
Frost on the back wall of the freezer, fridge getting warm
Frigidaire side-by-side refrigerator
Symptom
Fresh-food side was slowly warming over several days; a layer of frost was building on the freezer's rear panel.
Diagnostic finding
The evaporator coil was fully encased in ice — a classic defrost failure pattern. The defrost heater tested open; the defrost thermostat and control were checked and working.
Repair performed
Melted the ice off the coil, replaced the defrost heater, and ran a forced defrost cycle to verify the heater, terminator and drain.
Parts involved
Defrost heater
Result
Coil cleared evenly, airflow returned and temperatures recovered to normal.
Approximate total $395
Typical Repair Example
Not cooling at all — compressor would not start
Frigidaire French-door refrigerator, about six years old
Symptom
Both compartments warm. The fans ran and the lights worked, but the compressor clicked on and off without running.
Diagnostic finding
The start components and the control output to the compressor tested good. The compressor drew locked-rotor current and tripped its overload repeatedly — a failed compressor, not a control problem.
Repair performed
EPA 608 procedure: recovered the refrigerant, replaced the compressor and filter-drier, brazed under nitrogen, pressure-tested, evacuated to a deep vacuum and weighed in the factory charge.
Normal cooling with stable temperatures. Sealed-system repair covered by our labor warranty; the compressor carries the applicable manufacturer warranty.
Approximate total $1,450

Garage refrigerators and freezers in Las Vegas
Plenty of valley homes keep a second Frigidaire refrigerator or freezer in the garage, where summer temperatures can run well above what most refrigerators are designed for. In that heat the compressor runs almost constantly, the condenser fan and start components work harder, and the fresh-food section may struggle. Check the operating temperature range in your use and care guide. If your refrigerator is only struggling in summer, that's useful information to share when you call.
What we check on every refrigerator visit
Temperatures in both compartments, and how they respond while the system runs
Evaporator fan, condenser fan and compressor operation
Frost pattern on the evaporator coil when the symptoms call for it
Defrost circuit: heater, thermostat or sensor, and control
Door gaskets, door alignment and leveling
Condenser coil condition and airflow under the cabinet

Why is my Frigidaire freezer cold but the refrigerator warm?
Most Frigidaire refrigerators cool the fresh-food section with air from the freezer's evaporator. If the evaporator fan stops, the coil ices over from a defrost failure, or the air damper sticks, the fresh-food side warms up first while the freezer stays cold. A technician confirms which one it is by checking airflow, frost and the defrost and fan circuits.
Should I unplug my refrigerator if it stops cooling?
Unplugging it for several hours with the doors open can temporarily melt ice off a frozen evaporator coil, which sometimes brings cooling back for a few days. That is a clue — it points to a defrost or airflow problem — but not a fix. Keep food safe in the meantime and schedule a diagnosis.
How long does a Frigidaire refrigerator repair take?
Most component repairs take one to two hours at your home. If the part is not on the truck, we order it and come back. Sealed-system repairs usually take longer and may need a second visit.
Can you fix my refrigerator the same day?
Often, yes, when the failed part is one we carry, such as common fan motors and defrost components. Model-specific parts like control boards and some ice makers may need to be ordered.
Is it worth repairing an older Frigidaire refrigerator?
Usually, for component repairs like fans, defrost parts, sensors and valves. For a compressor or evaporator on an older, lower-cost refrigerator, replacement may make more sense. We give you the price first so you can decide.
Do you repair Frigidaire freezers too?
Yes. We service the freezer section of every Frigidaire refrigerator, and standalone upright and chest freezers too — see Frigidaire freezer repair.
