Frigidaire Refrigerator Compressor Replacement

A Frigidaire refrigerator compressor replacement in the Las Vegas Valley typically costs $700–$1,650 in total, depending on the model, the compressor and how much access work is needed. It is a full sealed-system job: refrigerant recovery, brazing, a new filter-drier, deep evacuation and a weighed-in charge, performed by an EPA 608-certified technician.

Is it really the compressor?

Many refrigerators condemned as "bad compressor" don't have one. Before a compressor is replaced, it should be proven bad. Symptoms that look like compressor failure but often aren't:

SymptomOften actuallyHow we tell
Clicking every few minutes, compressor never runsFailed start relay or overload, or a compressor that won't startResistance and current checks on the compressor windings and start components
Compressor silent, everything else onControl not calling for cooling, wiring, or a failed control outputVoltage at the compressor during a call for cooling
Compressor runs, little coolingDirty condenser, dead condenser fan, refrigerant leak, restrictionCondenser airflow, frost pattern, temperatures, sealed-system checks
Compressor runs, freezer cold, fridge warmEvaporator fan, defrost, damperAirflow and frost inspection — not a compressor problem
Very hot compressor, short cyclingCondenser airflow or a failing compressorCondenser fan and coil checks first

A compressor is replaced only when testing shows it won't start with good start components and power, has shorted or grounded windings, or runs without pumping.

What a proper compressor replacement includes

Compressor replacement is not a bolt-on part swap. Done correctly, it looks like this:

  1. Confirm the diagnosis with electrical tests and system readings.
  2. Recover the refrigerant with EPA-approved recovery equipment. Venting refrigerant is illegal.
  3. Check the old compressor's oil. Frigidaire's manual says burned-smelling, dark or gritty oil means the system must be flushed before the new compressor goes in.
  4. Remove the old compressor and cut out the old filter-drier (cut, not unbrazed, so trapped moisture isn't driven back into the system).
  5. Install the new compressor and a new filter-drier, keeping the system open as briefly as possible — R-134a compressor oil absorbs moisture from the air.
  6. Pressure-test for leaks.
  7. Evacuate for at least 30 minutes to 500 microns, confirmed with a micron gauge.
  8. Charge with new refrigerant in the exact amount on the refrigerator's serial plate. Charges are small, so "charging by feel" or by pressure alone is not accurate enough.
  9. Run and verify temperatures, amperage and cycling, and leak-test the high side with the unit running.

Estimates for typical repairs, not quotes. Your exact price is given for approval after diagnosis, before work begins. The $75 service call is applied toward an approved repair. How our pricing works.

What moves the price within the range:

  • The compressor itself. Prices vary by model, capacity and type, and by supplier stock at the time.
  • Refrigerant type and amount.
  • Access. Built-in or tightly installed refrigerators, cabinetry, water lines and the need to pull the unit out all add labor.
  • What else failed. A compressor that burned out internally can contaminate the system, which may call for extra flushing or a second filter-drier and longer evacuation.
  • Return trips. If the compressor has to be ordered, the job may take two visits.

Repair or replace the refrigerator?

A compressor job is one of the most expensive repairs a refrigerator can need, so we always talk it through. Our rule of thumb:

  • Usually worth it: a French-door, side-by-side or Gallery/Professional refrigerator in good condition, with sound cabinet, doors and liners, especially one built into cabinetry where a replacement would need to fit the same opening.
  • Often not worth it: an older, lower-cost top-freezer refrigerator, or one with other problems — cracked liners, failing door gaskets, a struggling ice maker — on top of the compressor.

If the refrigerator is still within the manufacturer's sealed-system warranty period, check that first; sealed-system parts on many refrigerators carry longer manufacturer coverage than the rest of the appliance.

Typical compressor replacement

Typical Repair Example

Not cooling at all — compressor would not start

Frigidaire French-door refrigerator, about six years old

Symptom
Both compartments warm. The fans ran and the lights worked, but the compressor clicked on and off without running.
Diagnostic finding
The start components and the control output to the compressor tested good. The compressor drew locked-rotor current and tripped its overload repeatedly — a failed compressor, not a control problem.
Repair performed
EPA 608 procedure: recovered the refrigerant, replaced the compressor and filter-drier, brazed under nitrogen, pressure-tested, evacuated to a deep vacuum and weighed in the factory charge.
Parts involved
Compressor, filter-drier, start device, refrigerant
Result
Normal cooling with stable temperatures. Sealed-system repair covered by our labor warranty; the compressor carries the applicable manufacturer warranty.

Approximate total $1,450

Compressor replacement questions

How long does a refrigerator compressor replacement take?

On site, usually three to five hours, depending on access and how long the evacuation takes. If the compressor has to be ordered, the diagnosis and the repair are on separate days.

How do I know if my refrigerator compressor is bad?

Common signs are a refrigerator that is warm in both compartments while it clicks on and off without running, or a compressor that runs constantly while the cabinet stays warm. But start devices, controls, fans and dirty condensers cause the same symptoms for much less money, so the compressor should be confirmed with electrical tests and system readings before it is replaced.

Can a refrigerator compressor be repaired instead of replaced?

The compressor itself is a sealed unit and isn't repaired internally. Its start relay and overload can be replaced separately, and those fail far more often than the compressor does.

What warranty comes with a compressor replacement?

Our labor is covered for 90 days. The new compressor carries the applicable 1-year manufacturer parts warranty when it meets that warranty's conditions.

Why does compressor replacement cost so much more than other refrigerator repairs?

Because it is really a sealed-system job, not a part swap: recovery, brazing, a new filter-drier, pressure testing, a deep vacuum and a weighed-in charge, done with specialized equipment by a certified technician, plus the compressor itself.
