Safe checks before you call

  • Radiant and induction: check the breaker. Make sure the control lock isn't on (most models show a lock icon). Clean and dry the control area.
  • Induction: test with a pan that a magnet sticks to firmly, centered on the zone.
  • Gas: with the burner cold, make sure the burner cap sits flat and the ports aren't clogged. After a boil-over, let the cooktop dry completely before trying again.

Induction cooktops are different

Induction cooktops use high-frequency power electronics to heat the pan directly. Diagnosis involves the power (generator) boards, the coils, cooling fans and the touch control, and it needs to be done with the right procedure because those circuits carry high voltage. Induction cooktops also have cooling fans that run after cooking; a fan that is noisy or not running can make the cooktop shut zones down to protect itself.

Cooktop vs. range

If your burners are part of a range with an oven underneath, see range and oven repair. For an oven built into a cabinet, see wall oven repair. This page covers built-in cooktops mounted in a countertop.

Cooktop questions

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?

The glass itself can't be patched. It is replaced as a part, or with the top assembly on some models. Whether that makes sense depends on availability and price for your model, which we confirm first.

Why is my induction cooktop clicking or buzzing?

Some clicking and a light hum are normal with induction, especially at high power or with certain cookware. A loud buzz, burning smell, or error codes are not normal and should be checked.

Why won't my Frigidaire gas cooktop stop clicking?

Usually moisture from a spill has reached a burner switch or the area around an igniter. Let it dry completely with the cooktop off. If clicking continues once dry, a burner switch or the spark module may have failed.
