Why laundry centers are their own kind of repair

Laundry centers are popular in Las Vegas condos, townhomes and apartments, where the laundry space is a closet or alcove. Because the washer and dryer share one cabinet and one control area:

Access takes more work. The unit usually has to be pulled out of a tight closet, disconnected from water, drain, power, vent and (on gas models) gas, then partially disassembled. That's why the same part can cost more to replace on a laundry center than on a standalone washer or dryer.
One appliance, two systems. A dryer problem and a washer problem are diagnosed separately, but we check both while the unit is open.
Ventilation matters even more. Laundry centers in closets often have long or crushed vent runs, which make the dryer run hot and slow.

Prices include the extra labor of pulling the unit out and taking the cabinet apart to the extent the repair needs. Very tight closets, doors that must be removed, or water and gas connections that need replacing to reconnect safely can add time.

Symptom: Upper dryer tumbled normally but clothes came out cold and wet.
Diagnostic finding: Correct 240-volt supply at the terminal block. The heating element was open; the thermal fuse and high-limit tested good. The vent run was partially restricted.
Repair performed: Replaced the heating element and recommended a professional vent cleaning.

Result: Normal heat and dry times on the test load.

Washer section won't drain

Symptom: Bottom washer stopped mid-cycle full of water.
Diagnostic finding: Drain pump seized. On this one-piece unit, reaching the pump means pulling the laundry center out and removing the lower front panel.
Repair performed: Replaced the drain pump, checked the drain hose, and reinstalled and leveled the unit.

Laundry center questions

Can you fix just the dryer or just the washer on a laundry center?

Yes. Each half has its own parts and is repaired separately. Because the unit is open anyway, we take a quick look at the other half and let you know if we see anything worth attention.

Do I need to empty the closet or remove anything before the visit?

Clear the area in front of the laundry center so the unit can be pulled out, and make sure the water valves behind it can be reached if possible. That saves time.

Is a laundry center the same as a stacked washer and dryer?

Not exactly. A stacked pair is two separate appliances, with a dryer mounted on top of a front-load washer using a stacking kit. A laundry center is one appliance with a shared cabinet. We repair both; for a stacked pair, choose the washer or dryer page that matches the half that has the problem.

Why does my laundry center dryer take two or three cycles to dry?

The most common cause is restricted airflow: a full lint screen housing, a crushed transition hose behind the unit, or a long, clogged vent run. Failing heat components are the next suspect.
