Troubleshooting guide
Frigidaire Refrigerator Not Cooling
When both sections of a Frigidaire refrigerator are warm, the most common causes are a stopped freezer evaporator fan or a defrost failure that blocks the cooling coil with frost. Check power, settings and door seals first; if it's still warm, the fan, defrost system and compressor start parts need testing.

Both the refrigerator and freezer sections are warmer than normal, or the refrigerator stopped cooling. Here is what Frigidaire's own service documentation says about it — what's normal, what you can safely check, and what technicians usually find.
Check this first: it may be normal
- After being unplugged or newly installed, a refrigerator needs 8–12 hours to cool down completely before food is loaded.
- A digital model can be accidentally left in showroom (demo) mode: displays work but the compressor and fans stay off. On many models both displays show the same temperature in this mode.
- On some electronic models, pressing the freezer setting past its warmest step, or holding the power key for 3 seconds, turns cooling OFF while lights stay on.
Things you can safely check
- Make sure the refrigerator is plugged in and the breaker is on. Check whether the interior light works.
- Check the controls: on many models cooling can be switched off from the keypad (OFF in the display).
- Make sure both doors close fully and nothing blocks them. A door slightly open lets warm air in.
- Keep food away from the air vents inside the cabinet.
- Make sure the front grille at the bottom is not blocked.
If the problem is still there after these checks, further diagnosis usually needs access to internal parts. A technician confirms which part has failed (fan, defrost system, control or sealed system) with electrical tests and system diagnostics. Many of these failures look the same from outside.

What may be causing it
Several different failures can produce this symptom. These are the causes Frigidaire documentation and service bulletins point to, roughly from most to least common. Price ranges are typical totals in the Las Vegas Valley, including parts and labor.
Freezer evaporator fan not running
The evaporator fan moves cold air from the freezer coil to both sections. A failed or iced fan leaves the refrigerator warm. The manufacturer also notes that a grounded fan motor can stop the whole unit.
Typical repair: evaporator fan motor — $180–$390
Defrost system failure
If the defrost heater, thermostat, sensor or timer fails, frost blocks the coil and airflow drops. The manufacturer tells technicians not to melt the frost before diagnosis, because it hides the evidence.
Typical repair: defrost system (heater, thermostat or sensor) — $180–$440
Cooling turned off, or showroom (demo) mode
Electronic controls can turn cooling off from the keypad, and demo mode runs the display without cooling. A technician confirms and resets it; often no parts are needed.
Condenser fan not running or dirty condenser
The condenser fan runs whenever the compressor runs; if it stops, heat is not removed and cooling falls off.
Typical repair: condenser fan motor — $180–$390
Compressor start relay or overload
An open start relay keeps the compressor from starting and the overload trips, often heard as a click every few minutes.
Typical repair: compressor start relay / overload — $180–$330
Main control board, sensor or loose connections
Loose main-board or control-box connections are a known cause of no cooling, lights out or fans stopped; the manufacturer has technicians reseat them before replacing boards.
Typical repair: main control board — $250–$660
Compressor or inverter failure
Confirmed only after the relay, overload, or inverter board and the wiring are ruled out with electrical tests.
Typical repair: compressor replacement — $700–$1,650
Sealed-system problem (leak or restriction)
The manufacturer stresses that a defrost timer or fan problem can mimic a sealed-system failure, so those are ruled out first. A real leak must be found and repaired. Recharging without fixing the leak is not a permanent repair.
Typical repair: refrigerant leak repair and recharge — $400–$1,320
Clues that narrow it down
- It shows OFF, or the same number in both displays — points toward: cooling turned off, or showroom (demo) mode.
- A code or letters are flashing — points toward: main control board, sensor or loose connections.
- Quiet, then a click every few minutes — points toward: compressor start relay or overload; compressor or inverter failure.
- Something runs, but it stays warm — points toward: freezer evaporator fan not running; defrost system failure; condenser fan not running or dirty condenser; sealed-system problem (leak or restriction).
- A fan sounds louder than usual, scraping or ticking — points toward: freezer evaporator fan not running.
- Yes, frost or ice on the back panel — points toward: defrost system failure.
- No unusual frost — points toward: condenser fan not running or dirty condenser; compressor start relay or overload.

Error codes linked to this problem
These codes appear on specific Frigidaire control platforms. The same code can mean something else on another model, so check your appliance type and model.
- Er t3 — Fresh food temperature sensor open or shorted. (Frigidaire and Frigidaire Gallery French-door refrigerators from about 2020 on (R600a))
- SY EF — Freezer evaporator fan failure — the main control does not see the freezer evaporator fan turning. (Frigidaire Gallery, Professional and Frigidaire French-door refrigerators with a dispenser control panel (about 2011–2017 families))
- 77 — Demo / showroom mode — the refrigerator is not cooling. Unplugging the unit deactivates it. (Frigidaire Gallery, Professional and Frigidaire French-door refrigerators with a dispenser control panel (about 2011–2017 families))
- OP — The thermistor (temperature sensor) for that compartment reads as an open circuit. (Frigidaire side-by-side refrigerators (2013-era service literature))
- SH — The thermistor (temperature sensor) for that compartment reads as a short circuit. (Frigidaire side-by-side refrigerators (2013-era service literature))

What Frigidaire service bulletins say
Frigidaire publishes technical bulletins for technicians when a problem is common on certain models or serial ranges. These apply to the models they list:
- Not cooling, intermittent cooling, unit dead, compressor not running. Before replacing electronic parts, check the freezer evaporator fan. Intermittent fan operation causes intermittent cooling, and a grounded evaporator fan motor can stop the whole refrigerator from operating — if unplugging the fan restores operation, the fan motor is replaced. (Frigidaire service bulletin RFTT2528)
- Defrost timer troubleshooting on top-freezer models. On refrigerators with a mechanical defrost timer, a failed timer can look like a sealed-system problem — poor frost pattern, a hot compressor, ice on top of the evaporator. The manufacturer says to check the defrost timer before ordering sealed-system parts. A timer stuck in defrost stops the compressor; stuck in cool, the heater never runs; powering both at once ruins cooling. (Frigidaire service bulletin RFTT2513)
- Lights out, fans not running or unit not cooling on top-freezer models. Poor connections at the top-freezer main control board can cause lights, fans or cooling to stop; the manufacturer instructs technicians to disconnect and reconnect all board connections and recheck before replacing boards. (Frigidaire service bulletin RFTT2201)
- No cool, not making ice, high temperature, no voltage, freezing food. Misaligned harness connectors on the French-door main board can cause a wide range of symptoms; the manufacturer instructs technicians to unplug and reseat the main-board connectors and recheck before replacing electronics. (Frigidaire service bulletin RFTT2415)
When to call a technician
Frigidaire appliances can use different components and diagnostic logic depending on the model and control platform. Since several different failures can produce the same symptom, the safest next step is to have the appliance professionally diagnosed.
Further testing requires access to energized electrical components and should be performed by a qualified technician.
Sealed-system diagnosis requires refrigerant-handling equipment and should be performed by an EPA 608-certified technician.
