Frigidaire Washer Not Draining

A Frigidaire washer that won't drain usually has a kinked or clogged drain hose, a backed-up house drain, or an object blocking the drain pump. If the hose and drain are clear, the pump or its control needs testing.

Water stays in the tub at the end of the cycle, or the washer drains very slowly. Here is what Frigidaire's own service documentation says about it — what's normal, what you can safely check, and what technicians usually find.

Check this first: it may be normal

  • Some water in the folds of a front-loader's door boot at the end of a cycle is normal.

Things you can safely check

  1. Straighten the drain hose and make sure it isn't kinked behind the washer.
  2. Check that the house drain or standpipe isn't backing up (try another drain).
  3. If your owner's guide shows a user-cleanable pump filter for your model, clean it as described there, with towels down and only after the water has cooled. Many models have no user-serviceable filter. Use caution
  4. Make sure the cycle actually finished and isn't paused.

If the problem is still there after these checks, further diagnosis usually needs access to internal parts. If the hose and filter are clear, a technician checks the pump, its wiring and the control.

What may be causing it

Several different failures can produce this symptom. These are the causes Frigidaire documentation and service bulletins point to, roughly from most to least common. Price ranges are typical totals in the Las Vegas Valley, including parts and labor.

Kinked or clogged drain hose, or house drain problem

The owner's guide lists a kinked or clogged hose, a standpipe that is too tall (maximum 8 ft), or clogged house drain pipes.

Foreign object in the drain pump

Coins, pins and small items can get past the drum into the pump; the owner's guide says to call a servicer if objects may be in the pump.

Typical repair: drain pump — $180–$390

Drain pump failure

Drain-related error codes point to the pump, its wiring or a blockage. A technician tests which one.

Typical repair: drain pump — $180–$390

Lid lock, retractor or control problem (top-load)

On belt-drive top-loaders the retractor drives both the drain valve and the clutch, so it can cause both no drain and no spin.

Typical repair: drain pump — $180–$390

Control or wiring

A pump that never gets power can be a wiring or board issue.

Typical repair: main control board — $250–$610

Clues that narrow it down

  • Front-load — points toward: foreign object in the drain pump; drain pump failure.
  • Top-load — points toward: drain pump failure; lid lock, retractor or control problem (top-load).
  • Laundry center (stacked) — points toward: drain pump failure; lid lock, retractor or control problem (top-load).
  • Humming but no water moves — points toward: foreign object in the drain pump; kinked or clogged drain hose, or house drain problem.
  • Silence — points toward: drain pump failure; control or wiring.
  • Yes — points toward: drain pump failure; control or wiring.

Error codes linked to this problem

These codes appear on specific Frigidaire control platforms. The same code can mean something else on another model, so check your appliance type and model.

  • E2 — Water not draining. (Frigidaire top-load washers with push-button control and digital display (about 2018 on))
  • E2 — Drainage problem — the tub did not drain completely within the time limit (about 10–15 minutes). (Frigidaire FLVW top-load washers (belt-drive, gravity drain))

When to call a technician

Frigidaire appliances can use different components and diagnostic logic depending on the model and control platform. Since several different failures can produce the same symptom, the safest next step is to have the appliance professionally diagnosed.

Further testing requires access to energized electrical components and should be performed by a qualified technician.

Gas-system testing should be performed by a qualified service technician.
